Well, what a great autumn term we had in 2018! We had our first students sit their Trinity Rock & Pop exams in December, and we also had students sit their RSL exams that they had been studying hard for. I’m really happy to announce that everybody passed with flying colours! (With merits and distinctions I mean.) Well done everybody!
Also, December and January has seen a mighty influx of new students to the studio. I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome all of you on board. We look forward to making mighty fine drummers out of the lot of you!
As for other things that are new, we have an updated ‘Drumeoke’ repertoire to study and play-along to, including some Queen and some AC/DC for all you rockers out there! We also have the opportunity to “sit in with the big band” for any budding Gene Krupa’s.
We also have slightly extended our opening times to accommodate for our new students, including some later slots on Saturdays that will be taught by John. Welcome back John!
That’s it for now, but look out for a newsletter that I will be emailing out at the beginning of February, keeping everybody up to date with what is on offer here at the studio.
Time for a quick update!
The ‘Dead Good Friday’ drum event held at the end of March was a huge success. The aim for the event was to provide the opportunity for all our drum students to get on stage and play with a live band. Over 20 of our students performed to an audience of approximately 90-100 guests. Students performed songs they’d learned in lessons with the band (without rehearsal) and others joined in for jams. Some of our students have only been drumming since Christmas and we felt incredibly proud to see some go from nervous wrecks to being first in line to get back up for another jam.
Feedback from students and parents has been overwhelmingly positive and the boost in confidence it has evidently given our drummers has been fantastic to see in lessons. You can view photos and videos from the event below.
We have continued our 100% pass-rate record in the latest round of graded examinations where every student passed with merit. Well done drummers!
Some new lesson slots have just become available – if you would like to commence lessons we advise you enquire soon as these slots are likely to go quickly.
So much happening right now but most importantly this!
(see picture attached)
Our students will have the fantastic opportunity to play and jam with a live band made up of professional musicians. Students are busy learning the songs that they will perform at the event.
We have Bailey Audio Systems Ltd on sound and lights.
Students will be performing a wide variety of songs from Bruno Mars to Metallica – this will be a lot of fun!
Please be aware that this event is for Northwich Drum Studio students. Admission is exclusively for students and their family and friends only.

In October we had some fantastic results in the Rockschool RSL Awards examinations. Students who sat their grades received:
- Grade 1 Distinction
- Grade 2 Merit
- Grade 3 Merit
We have more students sitting grades currently, we will announce their results when they come in.
From May 2017 the cost of a half-hour drum lesson will increase from £13 to £14. My last price increase was in 2012 and I have kept my lesson prices competitive and below union rates (MU teaching rate is £32 per hour). Prepaid lessons that carry over into May are not subject to the price increase.
We Now Accept Card Payments
In May we will begin accepting payment by debit/credit card. Unfortunately we are no longer accepting payment by bank transfer, but we believe card payments will be more convenient for those used to paying by bank transfer. We also still accept cash and cheque.
We have various different items on sale at Northwich Drum Studio and we can special order most products. We also have some items available on eBay, click the link to be taken to our shop. We’ll be adding more items throughout the year. If you are looking for anything specifically, please message us and we can see what we can do.
GRADED EXAMINATIONS – Congratulations to the following students for receiving excellent results in their RSL (Rockschool) Graded Examinations.
- Beatrice Dorsch – Grade 1 with Distinction
- Henry Steen – Grade 1 with Distinction
- Harry Sheldrick – Grade 2 with Distinction
- Billy Goulding – Grade 5 with Merit
Well done to you all! Amazing results.
DRUM SHOP – Students may notice that there are some changes happening at the studio. That it because as well as a drum school we are expanding into a drum shop! We will be selling practice pads, cymbals, snare drums, heads, hardware, pedals, etc. More updates on this coming soon.

Back in late September we held a drum workshop at Moor Allerton Preparatory School in Manchester. In the workshop we talked about the drum kit, it’s history and the various different ways the drums can be played to cater for different styles of music. We also talked about the cajon and students were given the opportunity to play some of the instruments. I’m delighted to announce that pupils were so excited about playing drums that Moor Allerton has bought their own drum kit and invited Northwich Drum Studio to teach drums at the school.
Our cajon drumming adult education course at Sir John Deane’s College concluded in October and proved to be very enjoyable for all. We’re already making plans to run more cajon drumming events soon.
We have a new studio and a new tutor!
Here it is, our new studio! And we would also like to welcome Ollie Young, our new guitar, bass and double bass tutor. Ollie is a multi-instrumentalist with over 12 years of experience ranging from band work, studio sessions and in house session musician for Sound Bunker Studios based in Northamptonshire. Ollie has taught privately with a strong focus on jazz, technique, and theory, although Ollie is also proficient performing and teaching rock and pop.
Guitar, bass and double bass lessons will be held at Northwich Drum Studio on Monday evenings.
As well as having a new tutor, we’re also thrilled our new studio has free tea and coffee making facilities! Waiting students and parents are welcome to help themselves to drinks.
We will be running a short 5 week evening course on the cajon at Sir John Deane’s Sixth Form College starting in Autumn. The course is being rolled out as part of the college’s adult education services.
What is the cajon you ask?
The cajon (pronounced ‘ca-hon’) is a South American instrument that’s affordable, accessible and a great rhythmic accompaniment to acoustic music. Whether you want to learn to drum along to friends’ guitar playing, or just learn a new skill, this short course promises to be fun and therapeutic. This course is suitable for absolute beginners or people who have drummed before. Cajons will be provided, so all you will need to bring with you is enthusiasm.
Summer holidays are here!
But we’re not taking a break, although we are condensing our lesson slots.
Summer Teaching Times:
- Wednesdays 12pm-8pm (open to all)
- Thursdays 5pm-9pm (adults only).
From September we will resume our normal teaching days, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday daytimes.
We now supply Code Drum Heads
Code are a new(ish), British company and their heads come in at between 40-50% cheaper than the bigger brands. Recently I bought a very old Premier drum kit (for £51!) and replaced all the original heads for Codes. I’ve been very impressed with the result.
You can contact us directly for a pricelist or ask about Code Heads in your lesson.
We hope you all have an excellent summer! We’ll be back with an update in September.
We understand that for some of our adult students it can sometimes be demoralising when they arrive for their lesson to see very young children coming out of the lesson before. We want everyone to feel comfortable in their lessons and we also want adults to know that lots of other adults are having lessons too. This is why we are allocating our Thursday night sessions to adults only. If you know any grown-ups who think they might be too old to pick up the sticks, let them know that we have an entire evening every week dedicated to adults learning drums.
We’d like to say a big congratulations to Billy Goulding and Thomas Ravenscroft for both achieving Merits in their Rockschool Grade 4 examinations. Well done!
At the studio…
… we’ve had a great start to 2016. Our Saturday sessions are very busy and our evening lessons are filling up fast too, but we still have some slots available for new drummers.
We’d like to wish everyone a happy Easter! We hope you enjoy the long weekend.
